First, place the cold ice on the gum area, and place the towel over the ice to help insulate it and trap the cold air around the gum. Let the ice pack sit on the gum for at least fifteen minutes. Once the gum is frozen, you can scrape it with a metal tablespoon or a butter knife. Repeat the process as needed to get rid of all the gum. Keep in mind that the "freeze it out" method only works on fresh gum. Make sure you act immediately and get it all out before the gum gets harder and is buried deeper into your carpet.
Grease it out!
As gum is exposed to air, it begins to harden. Therefore, the longer the gum is in your carpet, the harder it will get. For deeper, older, more stubborn gum, you can use the "grease it out" method. You can apply a greasy substance like WD-40 or peanut butter to the gum, and it will slowly soften and eat away at it. After a few minutes, try and remove the gum with a metal tablespoon. Although using grease to remove gum can be quite effective, you will often be left to deal with another grease mess on your carpet. Avoid treating subsequent messes with rubbing alcohol, bleach, or other cleaning agents with harsh chemicals.
