Tips for Removing Red Wine Stains

Warm homes filled with loved ones, great food and plenty of red wine are hallmarks of a joyous holiday season! Another hallmark of a good time had by all? The red wine stains left throughout your home after the celebrations end. It seems red wine has a way of finding the harder to clean areas of your home such as area rugs, carpet, upholstery and marble countertops. Talk about a dinner party dilemma! To help, our team of Tampa Bay cleaning experts have put together a few time-tested tips for removing red wine stains without using harsh chemicals.

Removing Red Wine Stains from Area Rugs, Upholstery and Carpets:

The best way to clean red wine from area rugs and carpets is to try and blot access liquid as soon as the spill occurs using a clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel. Next, you’ll want to dilute the stain by pouring a small amount of cold, clean water on the area rug or carpet stain spot and continue to blot (don’t rub).

We don’t believe in using harsh chemicals to get things clean, so we recommend that you clean the area rug or carpet stain spot by using a mixture of three parts baking soda to one part water to form a paste. Spread the paste over the red wine spill and vacuum up after a few minutes.

Removing Red Wine Stains from Countertops:

The kitchen is the heart of the party especially around the holidays when dinner is being prepared. So it only figures that someone is going to spill their glass or get a red wine ring when refilling their glass.

Here’s the deal: removing red wine stains those beautiful marble countertops can be a bit challenging. Marble is more porous than granite.  You need to clean up spills quickly to avoid staining, even when the countertops are sealed. A marble stain happens when wine has the chance to absorb into the stone countertops.

We suggest you start by blotting up any excess red wine and use cool, clean water to remove the red wine residue. Next, use a mixture of three parts baking soda to one part water to form a paste. Again, this should be spread onto the marble countertop to clean the red wine stain; let it sit overnight before wiping off the excess paste. The baking soda should pull up much of the stain once it’s dry.

When it comes to cleaning marble kitchen countertops, sometimes its best to call in the stain removal professionals. So if the ring or stain is still there after you’ve tried to remove it, call us ASAP. Once we’ve cleaned the stain, sealing can help prevent stains in the future.

Other Red Wine Stain Cleaning Methods:

We get it, you may not have baking soda on hand and red wine stains must be cleaned up quickly. So you can also try:

Club Soda & Salt-Should help while the stain is fresh and damp. Start by blotting the stain with a paper towel. Once the moisture is mostly gone, sprinkle on a layer of salt. Pour club soda over the salt. Let the mix sit on the stain for several hours then vacuum.
Vodka-You may have this on hand during the party and the alcohol can be effective when it comes to lifting discoloration from fabrics. Pour the vodka onto the stain. Then just soak up the vodka.
Milk-start blotting (again we stress don’t rub) with a paper towel then put milk on the stain. Wait an hour and use cold water to remove both the milk and wine. Make sure to get all the milk or have some nasty odor!

Don’t cry over spilled wine. If you are able to catch and clean a red wine stain immediately or soon after it occurs, your chance of removing the stain from carpets, area rugs, upholstery or marble countertops is much better.
